The European Parliament is an important forum for political debate and decision-making at the EU level. The Members of the European Parliament are directly elected by voters in all Member States to represent people’s interests with regard to EU law-making and to make sure other EU institutions are working democratically.
Patronage is a way for the European Parliament to grant its moral, non-material support to a selected number of non-profit quality events with a clear European dimension. The European Parliament is the only EU institution directly elected by citizens. And the citizens of the EU are directly represented at Union level in the European Parliament, as stated in the Lisbon treaty. Patronage is a valuable instrument to foster this intertwined relationship and to bring Europe’s Parliament closer to its citizens.
